Essex Academy Staff

Essex Academy staff encompasses both special educators and therapeutic staff. The goal of the staff is to provide the student with academic and emotional support within the school environment. The staffing is as follows:

Sheila Tucke, LICSW, Director

The director is responsible for the overall functioning of the school. He works collaboratively with the sending school district, the student, and the family around issues such as placement, treatment, and the student’s progress. The director works with students in group therapy, individual therapy and crisis situations. The director develops therapeutic groups that meet the needs of the students, provides opportunities for students to participate in recreational activities, and collaborates with schools and families in providing services to meet the needs of their students.

Counselors

The Counselors work with students on developing coping skills to effectively manage emotions, behaviors and life stressors. The Counselor works as a behavior management specialist in developing therapeutic plans which assist the student in participating in their academic and therapeutic treatment. The Counselor as extensive experience in working with adolescents in crisis, and will use a restraint free, solution-focused approach with students. The Counselor also meets with students on an individual basis to assist the student with therapeutic and academic progress.

Special Education Teachers

The teachers are Massachusetts state licensed special educators, specifically trained to work with students with emotional disorders. The typical teacher to student ratio is 5:1. This enables the teachers to provide individualized instruction. Hands-on project learning is provided to assist students in learning information through many senses.
