Every public school in Lawrence, Andover, and Methuen (grades 1-12) participates in one or more GLEC Enrichment programs. Student in grade K-8 GLEC Pen Pals Program Your teacher signs up the class in the fall to be pen pals with a class in another Greater Lawrence area school, You and your pen pal write letters throughout the school year. Some classes get together in the spring to meet their pen pals in person. See what classes have participated in GLEC Pen Pals Program.
Student in grades 3-5 AppleSeed Literary Magazine You submit your piece to your school’s AppleSeed advisor before the deadline (one in the fall, the other in the winter), and if the piece is selected by our editors, You will be published in next issue and get an invitation for you and your family to come to the launch night, where you will meet all the other contributors. You will a few free copies of the magazine. Contact the AppleSeed advisor at your school.
Student in grades 6-8 AppleSauce Literary Magazine You submit your piece to your school’s AppleSauce advisor before the deadline (one in the late fall, the other in the early spring), and if the piece is selected by our editors, You will be published in next issue and get an invitation for you and your family to come to the launch night, where you will meet all the other contributors. You will a few free copies of the magazine. Contact the AppleSauce advisor at your school.
Student in grades 7-8 Greater Lawrence Academic Bowl You are selected to be on your school’s Academic Bowl team. You will play with students from another school as teammates in an Academic Competition involving more than 300 7th and 8th graders from 18 middle schools. Contact the Academic Bowl advisor at your school.
High school student ApplePi magazine You submit your piece to your school’s school’s ApplePi advisor or ApplePi student staff member before the deadline (we publish short stories, poetry, essays, reviews, photos, art work, musical compositions, etc. and distribute hundreds of copies to each high school) and if the piece is selected by our editors, You will be published in next issue and get an invitation for you and your family to come to the launch night, where you will meet all the other contributors. Students in grades 9-12 Editorial Interns for ApplePi, AppleSauce, AppleSeed You are enthusiastic, committed, and can meet at the GLEC office in Methuen on most Wednesday afternoons from 3-5 p.m. from late September to early June. You will be playing an important role is selecting, editing, and laying out three regional student magazines that publish more than 600 students, grades 3-12, each year. Art students in grades 10-12 Collaborative Visual Arts Awards You are selected by your art teachers for this award (see art work of previous award recipients) You will be honored publicly and have your art exhibited with 25-30 other young artists from Greater Lawrence area high schools.
