South Lawrence East School Hosts Parent Night
Read the Eagle Tribune's account of Parent Night
The 21st Academic Bowl season came to an exciting finish with the annual Parent Night/Awards Night at South Lawrence East School in Lawrence on Tuesday, April 10. Parents were treated to a fun evening featuring team displays and raffle items in the gymnasium followed by exhibition matches in the auditorium. All the students who attended were able to play in either the annual "Red vs. Orange" student match or in the "Parent vs. Student" match. Activities included buzzer rounds, scrabble multiplication, word building and local geography "walk-on" activities, tower building, discerning the date of a front page from the New York Times where all the dates had been whited out, and assembling a magnetic map of northeastern Massachusetts.
In the end, the Red team had prevailed over the Orange team, the Students had once again beaten the Parents, the South Lawrence East-West Middle Prime were declared the season's Champions, the Arlington-St. Augustine Double A's were awarded second place and the Sportsmanship Trophy, and the Frost-Timony Snow Dragons had won the Spirit Award.
The final event of the Academic Bowl will be a field trip on June 1. Many thanks to the Academic Bowl Parent Advisory Committee and the Academic Bowl advisors for all their help in making the evening and the season a memorable one.
The season's DVD and team pictures will be distributed in early June. Orders for these items will be received until early May. 4/18/07

AUDIO FILE: Audience member figures out difficult math question
At the February 27th match at Tenney Grammar School a very difficult math question was asked in the 4th round: "How much is 1/x plus 1/y ?" After several tries by all three teams, no one could get it. When the Quizmaster asked if anyone in the audience knew the answer, a student from Georgetown got it right. After the match the Quizmaster interviewed the student to hear how she figured out the solution. Hear her explanation. 2/27/07
Tenney students know how to have fun
Tenney Academic Bowl students keep their spirits up on the Academic Bowl bus trips with a wide repertoire of "repeat after me songs." Not only do all these students love to sing, they made their own "Dream Team" T-shirts, as well. Hear their opening act on the bus. 2/27/07

Exhibition Match Big Success
Forty parents came to the GLEC "Lifeways Building" on Monday night, January 29, to watch a special Academic Bowl exhibition match between 23 students representing ten of the eighteen schools in the tournament. The evening match was organized by the Academic Bowl Parent Committee to give working parents a chance to see their children in action in the Academic Bowl, an in-school activity. The students completed in hands-on activities as their parents watched and then finished off the evening with a buzzer round.
The hands-on activities included a very difficult artist-observer problem, a 15 letter scrabble multiplication problem (see below), and an initiative which required making a contraption that could be guided and propelled to knock down bottles of different sizes placed at varying distances. The artists and the observers were then asked to speak about the strategies they used and challenges they faced in trying to draw a picture "out of a thousand words," so to speak. The competition was very close and exciting.
When the evening was over, it was the Orange Team that prevailed, scoring 19 points, to Blue's 18 and Red's 17. Each team had players from several schools. The evening concluded with a group photo and t-shirts for all the players. Many parents were impressed with the outstanding performance and teamwork of the students and several new parents volunteered to join the Academic Bowl Parent Committee, which did such a wonderful job in producing the event. Parent representatives are still needed from some schools. Photos of the match will be in the Academic Bowl Yearbook and will be sent to the parents of the participants and to local newspapers.- 1/30/07

Observer-Artist Activity
In this activity, the artist had to draw a picture based solely on the words of the observer, who had to look at the picture, remember it, and then describe it to the artist. The observer was given about seven or eight looks at the original. Pictured below are the best renderings from each match.

Changes in Academic Bowl Schedule
Advisors, parents, students: Please check the schedule frequently to make sure your information is up to date.
Advisors Plan Academic Bowl Season
18 Schools Participating - Most Ever
Advisors representing 18 middle schools met yesterday to plan the tournament and put together the initial schedule of the Academic Bowl's 21st season. Practice matches will begin in the week after Thanksgiving. Sixteen of the eighteen schools will host a match. Regular matches start in December and continue until the middle of March.
Some of the items of note this year include a simplified scoring system, using the study guides developed in the last two years to learn more about our schools and communities, and a focus on the geography, history and culture of the Middle East. A content outline shows a rough outline of topics that will be covered. Each school will be developing questions and resources (links to authoritative information) on one of the countries in the Middle East.
Rosters of 7th and 8th graders and names of parent volunteers for the Academic Bowl PAC are due to the quizmaster by November 9. The next advisor planning meeting is Wednesday, November 15 at 3:15 p.m. and the first AcPAC Meeting is Monday, November 20. Each school should be represented by at least one parent at the meeting. -10/20/06
