ApplePi debuts with launch night at Lawrence High School
On June 10, GLEC Multicultural Enrichment launched the first issue of ApplePi, our regional high school magazine, with a reading and reception at Lawrence High School. Students, friends, relatives and teachers came together to meet and hear the contributors recite and speak about their works. Students from six GLEC high schools contributed prose, poetry, music, photography and artwork to this 24-page issue. For more information, go to the horizontal menu and find Enrichment to find the four web pages for ApplePi. And look for notices on how to submit to ApplePi at your high school. ApplePi is produced and edited by students from the participating high schools who meet at the GLEC office in Methuen on Monday afternoons to produce GLEC three magazines: AppleSeed (grades 3-5), AppleSauce (grades 6-8) and ApplePi (high school). Read the Eagle Tribune newspaper article on ApplePi (PDF).
Student editors wanted
Wanted: High school students, especially sophomores, from LHS, GLTS, AHS, NAHS & MHS, who are interested in working on the GLEC magazine staff as assistant editors for GLEC’s three “Apple” magazines. Meetings are in Methuen at the GLEC Office on Monday afternoons from 3 - 5 p.m. This is a great opportunity to meet new people and be part of a program that publishes 600 students a year. MHS senior honored with GLEC Journalism Award
Samantha Iwen, MHS ’09, receives the GLEC Journalism Award from Mr. McConaughy
Samantha Iwen, a 2009 graduate of Methuen High School, was presented with the 2009 GLEC Journalism Award. Samantha served on the staff of ApplePi, AppleSeed, and AppleSauce since her sophomore year, helping to produce thirteen issues of these magazines. In addition, she helped to organize five "AppleSpice Coffee Houses," the inspiration for ApplePi Magazine. Sam had a piece published in AppleSauce in middle school and contributed two written pieces and one instrumental composition to the inaugural issue of ApplePi. The award was presented at the launch night of the 20th edition of AppleSauce on June 4 at North Andover Middle School and at the launch night of the first edition of ApplePi, which was at Lawrence High School on June 10. Thanks to the generosity of a parent with strong ties to the GLEC Enrichment program, a cash award accompanied this year's honors. Sam is now a freshman at UMass Boston pursuing her creative interests. Congratulations, Sam!
